Protecting Your Belongings: Essential Tips for Storage Success

Storing your items in a clean, secure unit is the first step — but how you prepare those items before putting them into storage matters just as much. A little planning and protection can go a long way in keeping your things in great condition, no matter how long they’re stored.

Here are some essential tips to make sure your belongings stay safe, tidy, and damage-free.

1. Clean everything before storage

Dirt, grease, or moisture can cause problems over time. Make sure clothes are clean and dry, appliances are defrosted and wiped down, and furniture is dusted before going into storage. It helps prevent odours, mould, and pests.

2. Use covers — but let items breathe

Plastic sheeting can trap moisture, so instead use breathable fabric covers or blankets to protect furniture, mattresses, and soft furnishings from dust. For electronics and smaller items, sturdy boxes with lids work best.

3. Avoid plastic bags

It’s tempting to throw soft items in bin bags, but these can trap moisture and cause mould or mildew. Use clear storage boxes or cardboard boxes instead — they’re more stackable and breathable too.

4. Disassemble where possible

Flat-pack furniture or anything that can be taken apart should be, to save space and avoid stress on joints. Keep any screws or fittings in labelled bags taped securely to the item.

5. Use shelving or pallets

Where possible, keep your items off the floor using pallets or shelving. It improves airflow and adds another layer of protection — especially during long-term storage.

6. Don’t overload boxes

Heavy boxes are hard to move and can cause injury. Keep weight manageable, especially for books or tools, and distribute heavier items into smaller boxes.
