When it comes to self storage, how you pack your unit can make a big difference. Not only does it help you maximise the space you’re paying for, but it also makes accessing your items easier when you need them. Whether you’re storing for a few weeks or a few months, here are some simple tips to pack smart and get the most out of your unit.
Uniform box sizes make stacking much easier and safer. Use strong boxes with lids, and avoid overfilling them – this helps prevent crushing and makes everything easier to move around.
You might think you’ll remember where everything is… but you won’t. Clearly label every box on multiple sides with its contents and the room it came from. Trust us – future you will thank you.
Put items you’re more likely to need near the front of your unit. Things like spare bedding, documents, or tools should be easily reachable. Less-used items can go towards the back or bottom.
Take advantage of vertical space by stacking boxes and using shelving if needed. Just make sure heavier items go at the bottom, and avoid building stacks that are too tall or unstable.
Wrap delicate items in bubble wrap or packing paper, and store them in clearly marked boxes. Avoid putting anything heavy on top of boxes marked “fragile.”
If you’re using a larger unit, leave a narrow walkway so you can reach the back without unloading everything. It’s a small effort that makes a big difference.
Where possible, take furniture apart to save space. Tape screws and fittings to the item so they’re not lost. You’ll thank yourself later when it’s time to put everything back together.
